Coneflower Garden Design: A Beginner's Guide to Vibrant Blooms

coneflower garden design

Coneflowers grow best in a garden that boasts a neutral soil pH of about 6.5 to 7.0. They can thrive in a variety of soil types, including sandy, rocky, and clay soils. For best results, add a bit of compost to your mixture when planting to give your coneflowers successful a good start. Summersong™ Firefinch™ (Echinacea hybrid) has variable flowers ranging from reddish-orange to pinkish-red for a captivating effect in the landscape.

Easy-Care Summer Garden Plan

There’s a coneflower for every garden, including bright single flowers and double blossoms, and colors from orange and yellow to red and deep pink. Coneflowers bloom from summer to fall and they shine in a variety of garden settings. To care for your coneflowers, you can remove spent blooms to encourage a second round of blooms. In the fall, you have the option to cut back the plants or leave the seed heads on for winter interest and as a food source for birds. Overall, they are low-maintenance perennials that add color and beauty to any garden setting. Native to eastern North America, they are hardy, drought-tolerant, long-blooming, and cultivated in an ever-widening range of colors.

How to Grow and Care for Coneflower, a Native Perennial That Brings Color and Pollinators to Your Garden

Some of the newest varieties are hybrid crosses between two different coneflower species. With these makeovers, Echinacea has morphed into a rock star in the garden. With the addition of so many new Echinacea forms, it is possible to design an entire landscape centered on this flower.

To get the most blooms (and the sturdiest plants), plant your purple coneflowers in a spot that gets at least six to eight hours of full sunlight each day. The plants will tolerate partial shade, but may eventually flop over, and the blooms won't be as prolific. Hardy in a wide range of climates, coneflowers are perennials in USDA growing zones 3 to 10. Plant them in a sunny spot and deadhead them throughout the growing season to encourage successive waves of blooms. By incorporating these companion plants into your garden design, you can create a dynamic and eye-catching display. The combination of coneflowers with lambs-ears and globe thistle creates an interesting visual texture while also attracting butterflies and bees. Lambs-ears, globe thistle, and other companion plants provide a vibrant and visually interesting backdrop for your coneflowers.

Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) stands out with its tall, misty spires of lavender-blue blooms and contrasting silvery leaves, offering a dreamy, wispy allure. When planted alongside Coneflowers, there’s a delightful interplay of textures and colors. The robust, daisy-like petals of Coneflowers beautifully juxtapose the subtle and feathery presence of Russian Sage. This pairing, besides being a visual treat, is also ecologically beneficial, beckoning a variety of pollinators to the garden, thus enhancing its vibrancy and ecological richness.

Other pollinators, such as honeybees and hummingbirds will visit Echinacea too. A well-thought-out garden layout enhances the visual impact of your coneflower garden. Begin by planning the arrangement of your coneflowers, taking into account factors such as height, color, and blooming seasons.

A serious disease that affects coneflower and other plants in the aster family is aster yellows, a plant virus carried by thrips. These pesky little bugs feed on pollen, as well as plant juices, by scraping the plant tissue and drinking the sap. As these bugs fly around and feed, they transmit the virus from plant to plant. Symptoms will be visible on new buds and open flowers that will show erratic, contorted growth. If you see this on your plant, there is no cure except to dig up the plant and properly dispose of it before the disease is transmitted to any other plants.

Plant them in an area that receives full sun and has good drainage. Some varieties will start flowering earlier, while others may produce flowers into fall. Learn more, along with timely planting advice, garden design inspiration, tips and more in our weekly newsletter. Part of the Dream series from Terra Nova Nurseries in 2009, this coneflower holds its color for an exceptionally long time. Others in the series are ‘Glowing Dream’ (watermelon-coral), ‘Amazing Dream’ (deep-pink) and midsize ‘Daydream’ (yellow). Maintaining a thriving coneflower garden involves vigilance against common pests and diseases.

Participants learn how right plant right place principles provide the foundation for a healthy and attractive garden design. Although the plant can tolerate some shade, coneflower should generally be planted in an area that receives at least 6 hours of full sunlight a day. The hardy plant is easy to maintain, but you'll need to ensure you're fulfilling its basic care requirements in order to have healthy blooms that return each spring.

If you want to enjoy butterflies and songbirds in your garden plant coneflowers. For weeks, even months, during the summer and fall the blooms and seed heads will attract a multitude of winged beauties. Each composite flower (actually a compact arrangement of ray and disk flowers) offers up a fully loaded buffet table for butterflies.

Take a look at our tips below to get the most out of your coneflowers. To ensure healthy cone flower plants, make sure they are planted in average, well-drained soil. By following these care tips and providing adequate water, your coneflowers will reward you with beautiful blooms throughout the growing season.

Moreover, Sedum’s vibrant and showy flowers add a pop of color to the garden, complementing the Coneflowers’ blooms. Another great benefit of planting Sedum alongside Coneflowers is that it attracts pollinators, particularly bees. To start a specific coneflower variety from seed, either collect seeds from a species (not a cutivar or hybrid), or purchase seeds from a nursery.

This Echinacea purpurea ‘PowWow Wild Berry’ is known for its vibrant rose-purple petals and relatively shorter Coneflower, and it has an extended blooming period. What coneflower needs the most is sun so pick a location where it gets plenty. In terms of soil, coneflower is undemanding as long as there is good drainage, and the pH is in the neutral range. Somewhat shorter than the pink versions with a honey fragrance and reflexed white petals. For her course project, Master Gardener volunteer Beth Ricciardi used overlays to sketch out plantings that straddle an asphalt driveway at the Science Museum of Long Island. She made this detailed sketch of perennial locations on one side of the driveway.

But the plant will establish healthier roots if it’s not putting energy into flowers the first year. Plants in quart- or gallon-size containers won’t need this if their root systems have had a chance to grow to fill the pot. But if you’re working with plants in small, 4- or 6-in.-wide pots, it’s best to either pinch the blooms off or cut the entire bloom stalk back, as in the photo at above. All coneflowers can become dense and root-bound over time, causing blooms to become sparse.

Shopper’s Diary: Peonies in Paris, for Flowers and Coffee

If you see mildew or spots on the leaves, simply cut them back and let them fill in on their own. A few pests enjoy coneflowers, so keep an eye out for Japanese beetles, aphids and leafhoppers. Coneflowers are often listed as drought-tolerant plants, but they will actually do much better with fairly regular watering. Water them daily just after planting, then transition to an inch of water per week for the rest of the plant's first year of life.

Can Coneflowers Be Grown in Containers?

The process will also help prevent an overabundance of self-seeding from the plant. As a native prairie plant, purple coneflower thrives in hot, dry climates but can handle a range of temperature and humidity fluctuations. However, they do not do as well in very humid climates, or in rainy areas where the soil stays wet. Coneflowers benefit from division every 3 to 4 years to rejuvenate the plant and maintain healthy growth. The best time to divide them is in early spring or early fall. To divide, dig up the plant, separate the root clumps, and replant them with proper spacing in well-prepared soil.

Tips for growing your best coneflowers

Place taller varieties towards the back to create a layered effect, allowing each flower to shine. Intersperse with lower-growing varieties for a balanced and harmonious composition. When designing your coneflower garden, don’t be afraid to mix different flower forms and colors for added visual interest. Create a pollinator-friendly space by incorporating them into your landscape design. Additionally, consider the height and spread of different varieties to ensure a balanced planting arrangement.

Participants are expected to keep up with the weekly assignments and activities as they purposely build on and refer to previous lessons. Assigned lessons with readings and exercises are required, with participation in online discussions, hands-on activities, and submission of design work and reflective journals. Most students spend approximately hours each week with the content, however more time may be needed to explore additional resources added each week. Despite how hardy they are, there are a few common issues you'll run into when growing and caring for coneflower. If you're looking to bring cheerful texture and helpful critters to your garden, coneflower is a must-plant perennial. Combine coneflower alongside other plants with similar cultural needs of full sun and good drainage.

Plant them in an area that receives at least six to eight hours of sunlight per day to ensure optimal growth and blooming. To attract more butterflies and other pollinators to your outdoor space, incorporate coneflowers into your landscape and provide them with a pollinator-friendly environment. As long as the plants are given plenty of room for good air circulation, they should not be bothered by fungal diseases.

"With voles, mix pea gravel, such as PermaTil, into the hole to prevent them from eating the roots." Never miss a fabulous garden or ideas on how to design your own. Planting, Care & Design of Coneflowers

You can plant a single color in groups or mix different colors. Or you can interplant it with ornamental grasses or other perennials between the groups of different colors of coneflowers. Just keep in mind that whatever you plant should not be so tall as to deprive the coneflowers of sunlight.

Complement your coneflowers with strategically chosen companion plants to enhance the visual appeal of your garden. Consider planting lavender, salvia, or coreopsis alongside coneflowers for a harmonious blend of colors, textures, and fragrances. Companion planting not only adds aesthetic value but can also benefit the overall health of your garden ecosystem. Coneflowers are sun-loving plants that thrive in full sunlight. Choose a location for your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Adequate sunlight exposure not only ensures prolific blooming but also contributes to the overall vitality of your coneflower garden.

With a long bloom time and adaptability to different soils, there are many ways to use coneflower in virtually any garden. Coneflower is an easy-to-grow perennial with long-lasting daisy-like flowers that attract beneficial pollinators and songbirds. Sometimes you may see dark spotting on the leaves — this is usually a bacterial or fungal condition caused by humidity and moisture. It may cause plants to drop leaves and look a little rough, but it doesn’t hurt anything.

Queen Victoria Kicks Off 107-Night World Voyage

rms queen victoria cruise ship

Cdre Rynd has brought all three Cunard Queen liners - including  the world’s largest ocean liner  Queen Mary 2 - into Liverpool. Queen Victoria is fully booked,  carrying 2,014 passengers, mainly  from the US and UK, on a  round-Britain cruise from  Southampton. The liner had arrived from Greenock, on the Firth  of Clyde, Scotland. Queen Victoria is in Liverpool to  mark the centenary of Aquitania,  one of the most successful ocean  liners of all time. All grades Suite accommodations have floor-ceiling sliding doors, large-size bedroom (king bed /convertible), bathroom (separate whirlpool bathtub, shower), living area (sofa, table, chairs, bar). In addition, Grand Suites (Q1) have a dining room, and Master Suites (Q2) have a dining area.

More about Cunard Queen Victoria

A variety of delicious dishes from fine ingredients is the reason why Cunard cuisine is respected. Another alternative dining spot is the Todd English Restaurant, with its classic English dining salon and Mediterranean cuisine served. The 2007-built MS Queen Victoria cruise ship is of the same design as MS Queen Elizabeth (2010) and has as fleetmates the Cunard liners RMS Queen Mary 2 (2004) and the fleet's newest boat (2024-built) Queen Anne. Queen Victoria’s Royal Court  Theatre was the first to have  private boxes, with six either side  of the stage. Other familiar company features are the Golden Lion  Pub and the Queen's Room for balls  and afternoon tea featuring that  great delicacy the Cunard scone.

Do not expect even the slightest hint of neon or glitz nor -- perish the thought -- rock climbing walls or bumper cars. Luxurious furnishings and eye-catching features lend an air of extravagance to the onboard atmosphere with muted colors and lots of dark wood. Architecture is in keeping with the ambiance of Cunard ocean liners of times past while the interior design offers the contemporary elegance of a modern luxury hotel. The original Queen Victoria keel (2003) had been destined to be a Holland America ship but was transferred to the Cunard ship by Carnival. Thus the Queen Victoria is 5,000t heavier and 11m longer than a normal Vista Class vessel and has a passenger capacity of over 2,000. The ship has 12 passenger decks, with the majority of its public rooms arranged along Deck 2 and Deck 3.

Loyal followers also totally approve of the fact that the cruise line employs a stricter dress code than that followed on other mainstream lines. On Queen Victoria's 21 December 2007 voyage, 122 guests and 11 crew on board contracted norovirus.[35] It was officially attributed to a guest who had already contracted the virus prior to boarding the ship. During drydock refurbishment 2017 (May 5 through June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy) were installed additional 43x Britannia Club staterooms, as well as single-occupancy cabins. According to Cunard Line, the decision was based on passenger demand. Queen Victoria's public rooms  follow the trend of the famous  QE2’s later refits which were done  in a retrospective art deco ocean  liner style.

Passengers

It is a traditional ship restaurant which along with the Grills is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Britannia is set-seating for dinner (from 6,00p.m. to 8,30p.m.) and open-seating for lunch and breakfast. It is Cunard’s tradition, passengers who dine at the Grills have assigned tables for dinner, lunch, breakfast and can also dine during restaurants’ opening hours at any time. Theoretically, MS Queen Victoria is a classless ship, but passengers are actually separated (like on all Cunard liners) as their onboard dining locations are according to their cabin's category/cruise fares paid. Britannia Restaurant is for regular cabins, Princess Grill - for junior suites, and the Queen’s Grill is for deluxe suites. The so-called Grill Passengers (dining in Queen’s and Princess Grill) have two private areas on Decks 10 and 11- Grills Terraces.

Featured Queen Victoria cruises

Queen Victoria single cabins (added on Deck 2 during drydock 2015 refurbishment) are designed specifically for solo travellers. Each of these accommodations (8 outside and 1 inside) can be booked with single-occupancy rates. The ship's single staterooms are furnished with oversized single beds (width 4 ft / 120 cm), en suite bathroom (WC-shower), wardrobe (2-door, with 3 drawers). The Queen Victoria passengers it is expected will tend to be the discerning 50+ of British and American origin. With all of the cabins under double occupancy, the ship is able to provide a space ratio of 44.7t per passenger and a crew to passenger ratio of one for every 1.6 passengers. At full capacity the space ratio is 40t per passenger and the crew ratio is one to 1.8 passengers.

Service history

The principal venues for onboard entertainment are the Queens Room and the Royal Court Theatre. The Royal Court Theatre, which is three-deck-high, is in traditional style with red velvet and has the design of a classic opera house. It is the venue for lectures, concerts and large-screen movies, too. The featured twenty private boxes can be booked for shows at $50 per couple. This includes champagne and finger sandwiches and bubbly in the box.

The Princess and Queen’s Grill with their lounge and open courtyard, are on Deck 11. 1 Deck, the lowest passenger deck, holds the lowest level of a three-storey stairwell lobby, as well as of the Royal Court Theatre. On 2 Deck can be found the mid-level of the Royal Court Theatre, casino, Golden Lion Pub, Queen's Room, Verandah à la carte restaurant, Chart Room bar, and lower level of both the library and Britannia Restaurant.

Unlike Queen Mary 2, no central circulation access can be seen on Queen Victoria- the main corridors are on the port side. The ship has a similar staircase to the grand lobby as on Queen Mary. Deck 1 (the lowest passenger deck), holds the lowest levels of the 3-storrey Lobby and Royal Court Theatre. On Deck 3 are the top levels of the Royal Court Theatre, Midships Lounge, Royal Arcade and the upper level of the library. The Health Club and spa, Lido Restaurant, Winter Garden lounge and two outdoor pools are on Deck 9. The Commodore Club (a large observation lounge, with ocean views and late-night room for interactive entertainment), Hemispheres nightclub and Churchill Lounge (which is for smokers) are on Deck 10.

MS Queen Victoria (2007-built, last refurbished in 2023 May) is the second of all the four Cunard ships - together with MS Queen Elizabeth (sistership), RMS Queen Mary 2 (flagship) and the fleet's newest liner Queen Anne (2024). The other public rooms are all used by passengers on an equal basis. The Queen’s Grill and Princess Grill have attached lounges and an open courtyard.

rms queen victoria cruise ship

To sum up, Queen Victoria is a comfortable, graceful cruise ship best suited to couples, single travelers and mature cruisers. Like the other Cunarders, Queen Victoria operates a class system in which the cabin grade you choose dictates where you eat. This means for those who want to splash the cash, the Queens Grill and Princess Grill provide top notch accommodations and more upmarket dining options.

The Royal Health Club and Spa includes a beauty salon, a gymnasium with ocean view and aerobics area, Thermal Area- steam rooms and sauna, body treatment rooms, relaxation area, rasul chamber for Hammam-style steam and mud bathing. Princess Grill and Queens Grill do not have sittings - when they are open, you can dine any time you choose. A note for confirmation sitting and table number will be left in your stateroom when you board.

The itinerary also includes ports of call in Australia and Southeast Asia before arriving in the Far East, where the Queen Victoria docks in Hong Kong for an overnight stay. The ship will have three bow thrusters each absorbing a maximum power of 2.2MW. The Queen Victoria will have one pair of folding fin stabilisers and each fin will have an area of 20m². The first section of Queen Victoria’s keel was lifted into position in May 2006.

The topmost level of the theatre, Royal Arcade, Midships Lounge, and upper level of the library and formal dining room are all on 3 Deck, along with a wrap-around exterior promenade. The decks above these contain mostly passenger cabins until 9 Deck, on which are the Cunard Health Club and spa, Winter Garden lounge, Lido Restaurant, and two outdoor pools. On 10 Deck is the Commodore Club, Churchill Lounge (for smokers) and Yacht Club[31] nightclub. The Queen's Grill and Princess Grill, with their attached lounge and an open courtyard between, are on 11 Deck.

Maureen Ryan was chosen as the ship’s Godmother because she had served on all four Cunard Queen vessels. The vessel’s maiden voyage from Southampton (its home port) took place on 11 December 2007, taking in the Christmas markets of Northern Europe. This was followed by a short cruise to the Canary Islands, with the first world cruise taking 107 days. The £270m MS Queen Victoria is a 90,000t cruise ship constructed by Fincantieri Maritimo in Maghera near Venice (the first Cunarder to have been built in Italy).

Where does Cunard Queen Victoria sail to?

rms queen victoria cruise ship

It is argued that the Queen Victoria is neither an ocean liner nor flagship, and has a mass-produced hull and superstructure. It has been suggested that the Queen Victoria should have adopted the name of a previous small Cunard ship such as Mauretania, or Aquitania. The vessel will feature Cunard’s well known celebrated luxury Grills accommodation and dining with exclusive deck terraces and an al fresco dining option. Since December 2007, the Queen Victoria belongs to the fleet of the traditional Cunard Line. The ship, that was last rebuilt and renovated in 2017, is now a dynamic interpretation of the golden era of sea voyages in a modern guise.

Queen Victoria staterooms review, floor plans, photos

The centre-piece is a three deck  Grand Lobby with a large wall  sculpture of the ship. The ship’s  wood panelling is darker than that  on the slightly younger MS Queen  Elizabeth and gives the ship a more  traditional feel. Jay St John also “flew” around  the water between the landing  stage and dock wall, entertaining  the crowds and disembarking passengers. Just like Aquitania on her maiden voyage, Queen Victoria sailed  up the Mersey and turned in the  river off Birkenhead to come alongside Liverpool Cruise Terminal,  with hundreds of people lining the  waterfront to welcome her. The Cunard liner MS Queen Victoria created Mersey maritime history when she regally cruised into Liverpool.

Power plant and propulsion system

The vessel has a reinforced bow and higher freeboard to handle North Atlantic Ocean's weather extremes. The ship has the very first true theatre at sea (with private boxes) and the largest ballroom (Queen Victoria At Sea). Other evenings are designated 'informal', which on Cunard does not mean passengers can turn up wearing anything they choose. For men, a jacket is essential, and although a tie is optional, many older men still wear one. Ladies wear cocktail dress, stylish separates, a smart trouser suit or equivalent. There are many ladies who still wear floor-length gowns on these informal nights.

The MS Queen Victoria is a new 90,000t cruise ship under construction for the Cunard Line (Carnival Corporation & plc) at the Fincantieri ship yard in Marghera, near Venice, Italy. This is the first vessel that Cunard have had constructed in Italy. The ship was floated out from the construction dry dock on 15 January 2007. On Cunard Line ships, you will experience a British and, above all, traditional cruising experience. On board you will find luxurious comfort, excellent gastronomy and first-class entertainment. While the RMS Queen Mary 2 is still mostly on the classic transatlantic passage, the two smaller sisters M/S Queen Elizabeth and M/S Queen Victoria sail different routes for every taste.

Some have a theme, such as the Black and White Ball, a Cunard tradition that includes the classic 'Officers Gavotte' dance. Dress code for these formal nights translates as dinner jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with tie for men, and a range of men's formalwear is available to hire onboard for anyone who does not wish to bring his own. Many ladies go all out to impress by wearing floor-length gowns covered in sparkles or sequins; some wear fascinators in their hair, carry glittery evening bags and are adorned with plenty of look-at-me jewelery. Ninety percent of passengers adhere to the dress code on formal nights, which is as it should be; this ship is elegant and guests enjoy looking their best as part of that experience. In typically understated British style, the ship doesn't do glitzy or loud, so ambience overall is modest rather than striking.

During the ship's drydock in 2017 (May 5 - June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy) were installed additional 43 Britannia Club staterooms, as well as single-occupancy cabins. Deck 2 hosts the mid-level of the Royal Court theatre, the casino, the Golden Lion Pub, the Queen’s Room ballroom, Todd’s English à la carte restaurant, the Chart Room bar, and the lower level of the wood-panelled library. The vessel does not hold the designation of RMS as with other Cunard ships, signifying that they carry Royal mail. The MS Queen Victoria carries the tradition of naming larger ships after British Queens following the RMS Queen Elizabeth II and both RMS Queen Marys. She is the second largest Cunard ship ever built next to the Queen Mary II.

Carnival Corporation ordered this vessel for Holland America Line, but before the construction was completed it was re-assigned to Cunard Line. Queen Victoria is not a ship that specially caters to families with children. But if you decide to take your children, they must be at least two years old for the itineraries of 2012, to be able to participate in nursery programs without your supervision. On Deck 10 you can find children’s playroom with lots of toys, and The Zone, which is specially designed for teenagers with computer games. During ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (May 5 - June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy), ship's passenger capacity was increased (from 2410 to 2489) by adding a whole new aft deck section to the vessel.

The Queen Victoria will continue to provide world cruises for the foreseeable future after the inaugural cruise. The Queen Victoria will undertake her maiden voyage to northern Europe in December 2007. Following this there will be a short cruise to the Canary Islands and then the ship will begin her first world cruise, circumnavigating the globe in 107 days.

The ship will have a length of 294m (964.5ft) and a beam of 41m (135ft) above the waterline and 36.6m (120ft) at the extreme of the bridge wings. The draft will be 8m (26ft 3in) and the height will be 62.5m (205ft) keel to funnel, which includes all of its 12 passenger decks. The 2017 refurbishment project cost Cunard around GBP 30 million (USD 40 million). The increased passenger capacity was accomplished by adding to the ship a whole new aft deck section. Wellness lovers and active athletes will find just the right balance of relaxation and activity in the spa and fitness area. Let yourself be pampered with a soothing massage or in the Rasul bath, push yourself to the limit in one of the most modern fitness clubs at sea - with stunning sea views, or take part in one of the aerobics or Pilates classes.
